One consequence of the multiple remodels
of the Carriage House
is that hard evidence of the original color scheme of the building is
very difficult to establish. Paint samples taken from around the
building indicate that the original color was a
light buff color or possibly a buttery white. Trim and window moldings, while possibly a
contrasting color, were likely not dramatically different. All the
evidence indicates that this building was never a Victorian "Painted
Lady". Still, a light toned paint scheme with trim details and
fenestration highlighted by carefully chosen trim colors can stay true
to the original color concept and provide the visual interest that the
building deserves.
Roof colors remain to be established. One possibility is a
standing seam galvanized roof. This would be historically
appropriate and would weather to a neutral gray. Some of the
original roofing material was a stamped galvanized steel shingle.
One piece of the shingle materials survives (despite its removal from
the building over 30 years ago) and could be reproduced if money became
available. The color scheme at left is just one possibility.
Final selection of color scheme will likely await a decision by the
ultimate owner. |
