This view of the existing South Elevation shows the extensive
modification of doors and windows which has occurred on the ground floor
to accommodate the needs of the various users - starting with retail
spaces in the 1920's |
Original windows are proposed to be
restored on much of the South Elevation based on historic images as
shown below. Doors required for fire exits and access to ADA
ramps will be designed to match period materials. Notably
missing from this rehabilitation plan is the large north-facing dormer
and the cupola, both of which are clearly visible in historic
photographs, and which were not removed until the 1920's.
Cost and structural considerations are major obstacles to their
replacement. |

Two
elements of the restoration, the second floor central window and the
ground floor windows, are based on these early pictures.
Appearance of the Carriage House in early photos was generally
coincidental. These views are enlargements of small details of
very large "bird's eye view" images of central Portland. FOLCH
members spent many hours reviewing historic photographs under magnifying
glasses to find these details. |
The 1926 photograph taken during
conversion from Carriage House to retail stores helps establish the
restoration of a number of windows. The two modern windows at the
west end of the South Elevation cannot be seen in the historic
photographs and are not proposed to be replaced with Victorian period
style windows. |
