Quick Links Story of Saving the Carriage House |
The Story of the Outbound MoveAs of late June, 2007, the Carriage House had reached its temporary home in the parking lot at 10th Avenue and Columbia Street, where it will wait for the completion of the parking garage under its new foundation. The Carriage House sits on the same massive steel and timber support structure upon which it moved the three blocks on that memorable day, June 16, 2007. Chain-link fence and security patrols are in place, to protect the building. The Friends of Ladd Carriage House painted the plywood skirting around the base of the building, which prevents access to the space underneath. Here is a brief chronology of the move: Fourteen Days Prior to the MoveStructural steel was attached to the beams and side walls. Each joist was supported by steel I-beams and the weight of the building was shifted from the walls and floor to the structural steel Seven Days Prior to the MovePneumatic lifts were placed under the building. The building was slowly raised off raised off its traditional foundation to a height of approximately 3-4 feet above the sidewalk. All city service markers, signs and meters were removed from the sidewalks on Columbia Street. Move DayThe move itself proved to be much more challenging that originally anticipated due to the very tight clearances on either side. Repeated stops had to be made while arborists trimmed tree branches. Where trimming was not feasible or threatened the tree's viability, the arborists rigged ropes to pull the tree limbs back from the Carriage House. Rather than completing the move by the planned 12:30pm, the Carriage House arrived at its destination parking lot around midnight. The following morning, crews moved the building the last few yards into its final position. See the amazing time-lapse video created by the photographic staff of The Oregonian... |
